"Patriot: At Any Cost" is about people who lived along the coast of Maine and the way that their lives were affected by the Second World War.Lillian is a young woman who desperately wants to contribute to the war effort but feels that she has been relegated to the role of cook and housekeeper for boarders at her family's summer home. That is, until she meets Callahan, a kind, brave and determined young pilot who has been turned down for future service to his country because of a previous injury. They join forces to patrol the Maine coast, cope with a town tragedy, and find their way into each other's hearts.
The detail here is amazing. The author obviously knows the area well and her descriptions of the sea, the town and everyday life there are thorough without ever slowing down the story. The clothing, food, music and morals of 1942 ring true.
My only quibble (and it's a small one) is that the book could have been edited a bit better. I was pulled out of the events a couple of times by an incorrect word ("edge" instead of "age" on page 116, for example.)
Overall, though, a rich and satisfying story that should be a good read for anyone who enjoys recent American history with a side of innocent romance.
